Why is breakfast
so important?
Children who haven't eaten
breakfast cannot concentrate on their studies. Hungry children are
easily distracted, lethargic, and as a result, often cause
disruptions in class. School staff tell us that the Breakfast Club
actually improves school attendance and cuts down on the number of
sick days.
How many breakfasts and snacks are served per year through the Breakfast Clubs?
During the school year, we provide over 2,500 breakfasts and snacks per day to area children. That's 260,000 breakfasts per school year!
Who is involved?
The Breakfast Clubs for
Kids are run entirely by volunteers who take time out of their
busy schedules to prepare and serve breakfast to the students. The
children range in age from kindergarten to high-school students.
What kind of food
is served?
A variety of food such as: cereal, fruit, bagels, yogourt, grilled cheese sandwiches, eggs, toast, milk, and juice. Each program coordinator develops the menu for their program by following Canada's Food Guide. The four food groups are represented during each meal.
Why are children
not eating before coming to school?
They aren't eating
breakfast for a number of reasons. The majority of children we
feed are from low-income families, where try as they might to
stretch a dollar, there simply isn't enough money for all the
nutritious food they need. Often, parents leave for work before
the children leave for school, and the child doesn't eat before
heading off to school. Sometimes they have to catch buses very
early in the morning and aren't hungry, but by the time they
arrive at school, they're famished.
Are only children
from low-income families allowed to eat?
No. All children are
encouraged to have breakfast at the Breakfast Club free-of-charge
regardless of their parents' financial situation. Hungry kids
aren't necessarily poor kids. The problem can and does cross all
socio-economic groups. We're not here to judge, we just want to
ensure that all children have at least one nutritious meal a day.
How much does all
this cost?
Thanks to our many sponsors, the average cost per breakfast is only one dollar! We do not charge the children in any way. Donations of breakfast items from the community also help us keep costs down.
What about the
parents/guardians?
Parents/guardians who have
children participating in the program are encouraged to contribute
either by donating money, food items, or by volunteering at the
program their child attends. Children are not denied food if their
parents decline involvement.
How are the
locations chosen?
Most often, the Human League Association is contacted by a group of concerned parents or school staff members who have identified the need for a Breakfast Club for Kids. Before implementing a program in a school or community centre, an assessment is done to determine the need for the program. We look at how many children are from low-income families; speak with staff, and survey the children themselves to determine if they would utilize the program. Ideally, we would like to have a Breakfast Club in all schools in the Sudbury area, but our current financial situation will not allow for that much expansion.
What should I do
if I would like to start a Breakfast Club?
If you would like more
information on establishing a Breakfast Club for Kids, please call
(705) 670-8633, or e-mail the office at
nutrition.humanleague@bellnet.ca.
What are the children learning from Breakfast
Clubs?
Breakfast Clubs teach
children that:
- they're cared about.
- kindness is a gift you give to others.
- they're part of a community.
- nutrition is important.
And, our volunteers provide excellent
examples of giving instead of receiving.
