What is P.L.A.Y.?

P.L.A.Y. (Positive Leisure Activities for Youth) is a local program that assists families who have low income with the cost of registration fees and equipment for their children's recreation.

P.L.A.Y. helps children from economically disadvantaged families get involved in the arts, cultural activities, and sports.

Positive recreation builds self-esteem, develops friendships, lets children and youth explore new interests and have fun.

Sudbury Chapter

Goals of the Program

  1. To contribute to the healthy physical, emotional, social and cultural development of children from low-income families by working with the community to remove barriers to participation in positive recreation programs.

  2. To implement a program to provide subsidized opportunities to children that involves all stakeholders and treats families with respect.

  3. To educate the public about the importance of access to recreational opportunities for all children.

  4. To achieve a level of financial sustainability that would ensure the recreational needs of children in our community continue to be met when start-up funding is no longer available.

  5. To involve a broad range of community partners to support accessible recreation for all children in our community.

  6. To provide assistance to as many children and youth as possible who, due to lack of funds, are unable to participate in sport, art, recreation or cultural activities.

Application Forms

NOTE:  Families are not to register for recreational activities until authorized by the P.L.A.Y. Coordinator; otherwise the family may be billed for the activity. P.L.A.Y. will not be held responsible for unauthorized registrations.

Who can apply?
P.L.A.Y. is for families residing in the City of Greater Sudbury. P.L.A.Y. helps children and youth from birth up to and including age 17, who are not already registered in a recreation activity. You may apply for assistance for all the children in your family but please use a separate application form for each child.

When can my child participate?
P.L.A.Y. runs year round. Be sure to get your application to us as early as possible. Different activities will have different deadlines. (Please see our section about Activities for more details concerning different activities.)

I've sent my application in, now what?
When your application is approved, you will receive a letter and purchase order in the mail. The purchase order will be your proof that P.L.A.Y. is sponsoring your child. You are to take the purchase order with you to register your child in the chosen activity, and give the purchase order to the organization registering your child so that they can bill us.

Do I need to provide financial information?
Everyone is required to complete our Financial Information sheet and provide proof of income, such as your most recent Revenue Canada Assessment of Income form or a recent payment notice from EI, Social Assistance, or ODSP.

Is this a one-time opportunity or can I apply each year?
You may apply to P.L.A.Y. each year.

My child has decide to quit her activity, what do I do?
Please call us as soon as possible. There may be another child who may be placed in the activity.

What happens if I need to move?
Please inform us if you move or change telephone numbers so that we can reach you.
